Honey Rye PA

13Jul08

I tried a bottle of the HRPA from the last batch two weeks ago and it was hoppy and bitter, much like I expected a Pale Ale to be.

Tonight I tried another bottle (now at 29 days since bottling) and it is a huge step up in flavor. It is still very hoppy, but the finish is nicer and more complex. I am going to enjoy this one as it ages.

Brew night is Wednesday and we’re doing a fall bear beer, a steam ale that I got in a recipe from BYO. I briefly thought about making two beers this month (the other is a pumpkin ale that we’ll do next month) but with leaving town Thursday I’m not wanting to bite off too much for Wednesday night.

  1. How long have you been brewing? What kind of setup do you have? Do you have ability’s to make lagers (cool temp brewing?).

I brewed my first batch a couple of weeks ago, and bottled this weekend. So far, no problems. It’s a scotch ale.

    Nice blog.

  2. Thanks.

Who woulda thought a preby from KY would find the blog? Internet is a funny thing.

My first ever batch was a scotch ale also, and I enjoyed it. I’m on batch 20 or something now, but have not graduated to all grain brewing yet, and may never switch over completely.

No lagering yet either–I don’t have the space and funds for the extra equipment, and the ales have been more than enough to keep me busy and full.

Hope you keep reading, and if you’re ever in Central IL let me know.

What kind of bear is a fall bear?

  4. Leave it to Floyd to be nit-picky.

    It’s fixed.
